Whalers and Whaleboats
Whalers were specialized sailing vessels designed for the arduous task of hunting whales across vast ocean distances. Sturdy and seaworthy, they were built to withstand harsh weather conditions and long voyages, often lasting years. These ships served as a floating base of operations, carrying the crew, equipment, and provisions needed for the hunt. Essential to the success of any whaling expedition were whaleboats, smaller, open boats launched from the whaling ship to pursue and harpoon whales. These lightweight and maneuverable craft were typically clinker-built and powered by oars, allowing the rowing crew to approach their prey stealthily and swiftly. Skillfully manned, these whaleboats were the primary vehicles for the dangerous and often deadly close-quarters combat with the leviathans of the sea.
