BlueJacket Spray

The concept of spray ships can be traced back to the late 19th century when American mariner and author, Joshua Slocum, famously completed the first solo circumnavigation of the globe in his vessel, the Spray. Slocum’s journey, which lasted from 1895 to 1898, showcased the capabilities and efficiency of spray ships in long-distance voyages.

Spray ships are characterized by their rigging and sail configuration, with a single mast and large triangular sails that allow for efficient propulsion through the wind. This design was popularized by Slocum’s success and became increasingly common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The use of spray ships continued to be prevalent in the shipping industry for many years, particularly in the transport of goods and materials over long distances. However, with the advancement of steam-powered ships and later, motorized vessels, the popularity of spray ships declined.

Today, spray ships are primarily used for recreational sailing and racing, with enthusiasts around the world maintaining and restoring these historic vessels. The legacy of Joshua Slocum and his iconic spray ship continues to inspire sailors and adventurers to this day.

Due to the complexity of the BlueJacket Spray hull shape and the extra-thick planking, this kit is recommended for modelers with plank on frame experience. The kit includes laser cut wood boards, multiple sizes of rigging line, Britannia metal fittings, sail cloth, display cradle, plans, diagrams and instruction manual. The kit does not include tools, paint, glue or display case.
