Description

Caldercraft HM Brig Supply

HM Brig Supply was a small sailing ship that was built in 1759 in Bermuda for the British Royal Navy. It is famous for its role in the founding of Australia as a British colony.

In 1787, the Brig Supply was chosen to accompany the larger vessel HMS Sirius on the First Fleet expedition to establish a penal colony in Botany Bay, Australia. The Supply, under the command of Captain Henry Lidgbird Ball, played a crucial role in the transportation of supplies and personnel to the new settlement.

During the voyage, the Supply proved to be a reliable and versatile vessel, carrying out various tasks such as exploration, coastal surveying, and the transport of essential provisions. The ship also made several important discoveries, including the entrance to Port Jackson, which proved to be a more suitable location for the new colony than Botany Bay.

Following the successful establishment of the colony at Sydney Cove in 1788, the Supply continued to serve as a supply ship and transport vessel for the burgeoning settlement. The ship played a key role in the early development of the colony and in maintaining communication and supply lines with the outside world.

The HM Brig Supply holds a significant place in Australian history as one of the key ships involved in the founding of the British colony that would eventually become the modern nation of Australia. Its contributions to the early days of the colony and its important role in exploration and transport make it a revered vessel in Australian maritime history.
