Caldercraft Granado

The HM Bomb Vessel Granado is a fascinating yet lesser-known ship in the British Royal Navy’s history.

The HM Bomb Vessel Granado was a bomb vessel, a type of warship designed to carry a large number of bombs and other explosive devices. She was built in 1749 at the Chatham Dockyard in Kent, England, and was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1750.

The Granado was designed to carry a large number of bombs, grenades, and other explosive devices, which were used to attack enemy ships and fortifications. She was armed with 16-18 guns, including 6-8-pounder cannons, and had a crew of around 100-120 men.

The Granado served during the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763) and the American War of Independence (1775-1783). She was involved in several battles and operations, including the Battle of Minorca in 1756 and the Siege of Havana in 1762.

In 1783, the Granado played a key role in the bombardment of Algiers, a major pirate stronghold in North Africa. The British and Dutch navies, along with a fleet of warships, bombarded the city and its defenses, leading to the eventual surrender of the pirates.

In the late 18th century, the Granado was converted into a hulk, a type of ship that had been retired from active service and was used as a floating storage vessel or a dockyard hulk. She was moored in the Thames River and served as a floating warehouse for many years.

The exact fate of the Granado is unknown, but it is believed that she was broken up or scrapped in the early 19th century. There is no remaining hull or structure of the ship, but her history and legacy live on through records and historical accounts.

The HM Bomb Vessel Granado may not be as well-known as some of the other ships in the Royal Navy’s history, but she played an important role in several key battles and operations, and her design and capabilities were significant in the development of naval warfare.
