Caldercraft Gunboat William

The Gunboat William is a fascinating piece of naval history!

The William was a small, fast, and maneuverable warship that was built in 1744 during the War of the Austrian Succession. She was one of the first gunboats built by the British Royal Navy, and was designed to operate in coastal waters and estuaries. Built at the Chatham Dockyard in Kent, England, she was designed by the renowned naval architect, Thomas Slade. The Gunboat was 60 feet (18.3 meters) long, with a beam of 12 feet (3.6 meters) and a draft of 4 feet (1.2 meters). She was powered by a combination of oars and a small sail.

The William was armed with a single 12-pounder gun, which was mounted on the bow (front) of the ship. This allowed her to fire a broadside, but also made her more vulnerable to attack. She saw action during the War of the Austrian Succession, which was fought between 1740 and 1748. She was involved in several operations, including the capture of the French port of Toulon in 1744.

The Gunboat William was one of the first gunboats built by the British Royal Navy, and was part of a small fleet of gunboats that were used to defend British coastal waters and estuaries. Sadly she is no longer extant, but her design and construction influenced the development of future gunboats and small warships. Her legacy can be seen in the many gunboats and patrol boats that have been built by navies around the world.

The Gunboat William may not be as well-known as some of the other ships in the Royal Navy’s history, but she played an important role in the development of naval warfare and the design of small warships.
