Description

USS Cairo. The Cairo is an advanced modeler’s kit. Construction requires custom cutting of parts and contains an extensive photo etched sheet that should be applied by someone with experience with photo etched parts. Kit contains plastic & brass rod, resin, metal and photo etched parts. Base & pedestals not included.

The USS Cairo (care-o), a 512 ton “City” class ironclad river gunboat built at Mound City, Illinois, was commissioned in January 1862 as part of the US Army’s Western Gunboat Flotilla. She began operations in February, taking part in the occupations of Clarkesville and Nashville, Tennessee. In April and May 1862, Cairo was involved in the campaign to capture Fort Pillow and was present during the May 10th action there. She was also engaged in action against Confederate warships during action off Memphis Tennessee, on June 6, 1862.

On December 12, 1862, while engaged in mine clearance operations on the Yazoo River, Cairo had the dubious distinction of being the first warship being sunk by a torpedo (mine). Her wreck was recovered in 1965, but was badly damaged during salvage operations. She has subsequently been partial restored and is on exhibit at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
