Viking ships were typically long, narrow, and flat-bottomed, with a shallow draft that allowed them to navigate rivers and coastal waters. They were built using wood, often oak or pine, and were caulked with tar and animal fat to make them watertight.

Viking ships were propelled by oars, with between 30-50 rowers per side. The oars were often decorated with intricate carvings. Viking ships used square sails made of linen or wool, which were often decorated with intricate patterns and symbols. Viking ships were known for their ramming prows, which were used to attack enemy ships or to breach fortified walls.
